Cresto Smartline X

The Cresto Smartline X is the smallest and lightest emergency personal evacuation device on the market. The device is light enough to be worn continuously thanks to the lightweight and strong Twaron® Aramid rope. The Cresto Smartline X is designed to be used once by one person. However, after use, the device can be sent to an authorised Cresto body for inspection and rope replacement.

The Smartline X can be used in all climatic conditions, with temperatures ranging from minus 25°C to plus 50°C. During wet or humid conditions the user will see a lot of smoke; this is normal.

Descent speed should be between 0.5m/s to 2m/s (metres per second). It is vital to keep control of the tail rope during descent. During long descents (more than 80m) or depending on speed and weight, the descender will get hot. Always wear gloves. The Energy absorber safeguards against peek loads during rigging/descent.

The built-in 3:1 mechanical advantage can be used to lift a user off their equipment during a pick-off rescue.

Designed for use in the following sectors:

  • Wind, Telecoms, Tower, Oil & Gas, Cranes, Offshore

New Petzl I’D EVAC

In April 2019, Petzl will launch their new range of I’D’s; including the new Petzl I’D EVAC.

Petzl I’D EVAC – Specific design

Like the Petzl I’D S and I’D L, the I’D EVAC is a self-braking descender with anti-panic function. However, there are a couple of clear differences. Firstly, to make lowering from an anchor more ergonomic, it’s handle orientation has been changed. Secondly, the inclusion of the auxiliary open brake means friction can easily be increased for handling heavy loads or using thinner rope.

D020CA00 Petzl I'D EVACD020CA00 Petzl I'D EVAC

D020CA00 – Petzl I’D EVAC – yellow

Similarities to the I’D S

  • Easy rope installation thanks to the rope guide and markings on the moving side plate
  • The safety gate allows the rope to be installed without disconnecting the device
  • Anti-panic function – helps to reduce the risk of an uncontrolled descent
  • AUTO-LOCK system – automatically locks the rope without having to manually move the handle or tie-off
  • Stainless steel wear plate – improves durability
  • Two descent modes – over the stainless steel wear plate or in the v-shaped rope friction channel
  • You can take up rope with the handle in the locked position. For instance, for a reverse haul system
  • You can screw shut the moving side-plate for incorporation in a pre-rigged rescue kit
  • Anti-error catch – helps to prevent incorrect rope installation
  • 250kg load capacity
  • Rope diameter 10mm-11.5m
D020CA00 Petzl I'D EVAC

In conclusion, the new Petzl I’D EVAC is well designed and provides a useful and ergonomic solution for lowering loads from an anchor.

Certification

  • EN 341 type 2 class A, when used with a PARALLEL 10.5 mm or AXIS 11 mm rope
  • EN 12841 type C, when used with a 10 to 11.5 mm EN 1891 A rope
  • ANSI Z359.4, when used with a 10 to 11.5 mm rope
  • NFPA 1983 Technical Use, when used with a 10 to 11.5 mm rope

Petzl ASTRO – International vs.European

The new International version of the Petzl ASTRO Bod Fast harness is available in the UK from April 2019. There are a number of differences between the International and the European versions; mainly due to the ANSI Standards requirements. We’ve collated the relevant information and have highlighted the differences below:

Petzl ASTRO International – Differences

Releasable shoulder buckle and lanyard parking points

  • The addition of the releasable shoulder buckle on the International version of the Petzl ASTRO is a useful addition
  • The doubleback buckle on the right-hand side (while wearing) is different to the European version
  • Lanyard parking points have been included; a parked lanyard connector will release with a 5kg force (0.05kN)
Petzl C083ba_astro_bod International

C083BA0x International showing shoulder buckle and lanyard parking points

Fall indicator on dorsal attachment point

The International version of the Petzl ASTRO includes a fall indicator on the dorsal attachment point which means it conforms to the relevant ANSI Standard.

Petzl C083ba_astro_bod International

C083BA0x International showing fall indicator on dorsal attachment point

Ventral attachment point

The European version of the Petzl ASTRO ventral attachment point cannot be used on the International version, again, because of the ANSI Standards. The International version does not therefore offer the facility to captivate progress lanyards on the central bar of the ventral attachment point. It does however still offer the ability to connect the Petzl PODIUM to the ends of the bar, using either the shackle accessories (C087AA00) or my using two Petzl Sm’D’s (M39A TL)

Lateral attachment points

  • The two lateral attachment points are conventional metal construction (rather than the plastic inserts of the European version)
  • This means they can be folded back out of the way when not in use
  • There is a saving on weight due to the H-profile (cross-section) construction
Petzl C083ba_astro_bod International

Waist-belt buckles

Wider webbing from the leg loops to the waist-belt

The webbing from the leg loops to the waist-belt is wider than the European version because the webbing needs to be folded in order to fit onto the central bar of the ventral attachment point.

Petzl GRIGRI and GRIGRI +

In this blog we’re going to run through the differences between the Petzl GRIGRI and GRIGRI + and what to consider when buying one of these devices.

Main differences

Anti-panic handle

The anti-panic handle: if the belayer pulls too hard on the handle, it clicks and the cam engages, pinching the rope, which stops the rope travel. The handle needs to be released in order to reset it and resume the descent. In other words, this is a really useful function when learning to control a lower.

The GRIGRI + is the only device of the two to have this function.

Choice of belay mode

The GRIGRI + has a selector knob which can be switched between top-rope and lead modes. Top-rope mode aids taking up slack which helps provide for a more comfortable belay. The 2019 GRIGRI does not have this function.

GRIGRI and GRIGRI + rear view

Stainless steel wear plate

The GRIGRI + has a stainless steel wear plate on the moving side plate. As a result, this improves durability, which is particularly useful for intensive use.

The 2019 GRIGRI does not have this

Rope compatibility

Dynamic Kernmantle single ropes conforming to CE EN 892 and/or UIAA should be used with both devices. Petzl recommends rope diameters between 8.5mm and 11mm for both devices, with optimum rope diameter of 8.9mm and 10.5mm.

Conformity

GRIGRI

CE EN 15151-1 type 6:2012, UIAA

Mountaineering equipment. Braking devices. Braking devices with manually assisting locking.

Type 8: Devices for belaying and abseiling with a panic locking element.

Similarities

Both devices have:

  • Assisted Braking function. This is activated when a climber falls. With the result that the cam pivots and pinches the rope which stops rope travel. Holding the brake side of the rope assists with the cam engagement. It is vital to always hold the brake side of the rope.
  • Rope installation diagrams on the moving side plate and the interior of the device.
  • Ergonomic handle
  • 3 year guarantee

Conclusion

These are two market leading devices, with functions appropriate to difference users. Petzl suggests the GRIGRI + is suitable for all users.  However, it is particularly useful to learners and Instructors. The GRIGRI is intended for experience users. The RRP for the GRIGRI + is £101 because of its additional features. The RRP for the GRIGRI is £65.

Petzl BUFF® Beanie & Balaclava

The Petzl BUFF® Beanie & Balaclava were new for 2018. As the UK has just seen it’s first wide-spread snow fall since March, I thought you’d be interested to read about the Petzl BUFF® Beanie & Balaclava and why they compliment the Petzl helmet range (and why they warrant the price).

They are made for Petzl by the globally renowned Original BUFF® who are based in Igualada, 60 kilometres away from Barcelona, Spain.

They offer unrivalled quality and innovation:

  • High-tech windproof fabric made of GORE® WINDSTOPPER®
  • Provide great protection against wind and extreme cold
  • Fit for purpose – designed for wearing under a helmet
  • Breathable upper section ensures your head doesn’t get too hot under your helmet
  • Fleece lined for ultra comfort
  • Bonded seems using ultrasonic and bonding technology, which means they’re completely flat against your skin
  • Laser cut perforations over ears (and mouth on the Balaclava)
  • Machine washable
  • 2 designs and 2 sizes
  • 3 year guarantee

I’m going to discuss a few reasons why the Petzl BUFF® Beanie & Balaclava are fit for purpose while wearing under a helmet. Firstly, they’ve been selected by Petzl to compliment their helmet range. Secondly, they will keep you warm. Thirdly, prolonged exposure to cold can impair decision making, reaction time and vigilance. Not a good mix when working at height. In conclusion, if Petzl feel that they’re safe to wear with their helmets, who are we to argue.

The New 2019 Petzl STRATO helmet

At Expo Protection in Paris on Wednesday 6th November 2018, Petzl launched their new helmet range. This new range of helmets and accessories will be available in the UK from April 2019. We’re going to take a look at the new Petzl STRATO helmet and the impact it will have on the current range.

Petzl STRATO

At 435 grams (415 grams for the VENT), the Petzl STRATO helmet will be Petzl’s new lightweight industrial helmet (replacing the Petzl ALVEO).

Petzl STRATO – DUAL chinstrap

Petzl A020AA STRATO DUAL chinstrap

This allows the user to adjust the chinstrap strength depending on the work environment and/or requirements:

  • work at height (EN 12492)
  • ground (EN 397)

The DUAL chinstrap is replaceable and comes in two lengths:

  • standard
  • Long

Petzl STRATO – CentreFit adjustment

Petzl A020AA STRATO DUAL Centrefit

Petzl’s CentreFit system allows the helmet to be perfectly centred on the head for better fit and comfort.

The two CentreFit wheels allow easy adjustment. They’re easy to manipulate, even while wearing gloves

Petzl STRATO – FLIP&FIT system

The FLIP& FIT system allows the headband to be in a low position, as a result the helmet fits securely. There are other benefits too:

  • the system folds into the shell for easy storage and transportation
  • the headband now comes with changeable absorbent comfort foam

Petzl STRATO – EASYCLIP

Petzl A015AA00 VIZIR EASYCLIP system

The new Petzl VIZIR, VIZIR SHADOW, VIZIR protector, VIZEN and VIZEN MESH now feature Petzl’s EASYCLIP. This is a quick release system, which replaces the fiddly grab screws.

Petzl STRATO – liner

Petzl A020AA-STRATO-DUAL-cutaway

The Petzl STRATO liner is constructed from two different materials:

  • EPS (expanded Polystyrene) – Light and rigid
  • EPP (expanded Polypropylene) – good impact properties

The liner (not the shell) deforms to achieved shock absorption. This means the shell can be lighter.

The Petzl STRATO is available as a solid shell (ABS) or vented shell (ABS)
