A-Frame Deadweight Anchor

The SAS A-Frame Deadweight Anchor is a portable anchor and is ideally suited to flat roofs with parapet walls between 300 mm and 1.8 m high. It can be used for both rope access and fall arrest purposes and provides two high anchor points. Assembly is quick and easy thanks to the spring-loaded sword pins; which eliminate the need for nuts and bolts. If used correctly, the pneumatic tyres will not damage roof membranes.

Limitations

Friction, and therefore effectiveness, can be reduced in a number of ways:

  • Using less than the recommended number of weight plates (all 12 must be correctly used at all times)
  • The type of roof finish. For example, gravel ballast, concrete pavers, green roof, membrane etc.
  • Surface water
  • Icy conditions
  • Excessive roof slope
  • Moss / Lichen or other contaminants on the roof

Deadweight Trolley Anchor

The SAS deadweight trolley anchor is a portable anchor device intended for use in industrial rope access and fall arrest. If there are no appropriate anchor points on a roof, the deadweight trolley anchor can be used. It is designed for use against a parapet wall but you can also use it against structural handrails / balustrades. It’s important to realise that it works by the amount of friction it exerts on the surface that it’s used on. With this in mind, the roof slope should be no more than 5 degrees downward slope from horizontal in order to avoid movement. Where possible, deadweight anchors should be backed-up.

Hydrajaws Model 2000

In this Blog, we’ll explain what the Hydrajaws Model 2000 is , what’s in the box and the available options and accessories.

Hydrajaws Model 2000 Deluxe kit

The Model 2000 Deluxe is Hydrajaws medium duty fixing tester. It enables engineers / skilled technicians to establish the working load limit and to validate correct installation of anchors / fixings. The tester unit uses a mechanical screw arrangement acting through a hydraulic load cell to measure the load applied to an anchor / fixing. You should turn the handles slowly and progressively in order to apply the test load. First movement is shown on the built-in movement indicator scale (50 mm stroke).

If the handles / gauge need more room or become obstucted, the top part of the tester can be rotated, thus giving more room. Furthermore, all Hydrajaws testers can be used in confined spaces by removing the handles. This leaves the 22 mm operating nut, which can be turned using a spanner.

The Model 2000 Deluxe is fitted with a fixed gauge. This means that the whole unit must be sent away for annually gauge calibration. Hydrajaws offer a Fast Track walk in service for gauge calibration. This needs to be pre-booked.

You can use this kit to test:

2019 Petzl ASAP

The 2019 Petzl ASAP has been launched from 1st July 2019. In addition, Petzl have also revised their ASAP’SORBER range and introduced the ASAP’AXIS 11mm low-stretch rope.

The new versions look the same. So, what has prompted the changes? The new PPE regulations! These require manufacturers to ensure that their products comply with any change to the Standards. This is the case for EN 353-2 (Guided type fall arresters), which now requires more stringent testing: all fall-arrest devices used with a detachable energy absorber, like the Petzl ASAP, need to pass the tests with or without an energy absorber (impact force < 6 kN). This also led to the development of a rope with an integrated energy absorber on the end that is clipped to the anchor: the ASAP’AXIS (R074DA0X). This is available in 10 m lengths from 10 m to 60 m.

2019 Petzl ASAP (B070AA00)

The most noticeable difference when taking the new 2019 Petzl ASAP out of the box is the missing Petzl OK (M33A TL) karabiner. This will no doubt catch a lot of die hard Petzl users out and the vast majority of the many Petzl UK non-technical resellers.

2019 Petzl ASAP (B070AA00)

In addition to the ANSI certified OXAN TLA (M72A TLA), the ANSI certified Bm’D TL (M032AA00) can now be used with the ASAP. Using both is compliant with ANSI Z359.15 certification. The Petzl OK (M33A TL) is still a recommended karabiner for use with the 2019 Petzl ASAP (where ANSI is not a requirement).

Certification

  • CE EN 12841 type A when used with an OK TRIACT-LOCK carabiner and an EN 1891 type A, 10-13 mm rope. An ASAP’SORBER or ASAP’SORBER AXESS energy absorber can be used, when needed
  • CE EN 353-2 when used with an OK TRIACT-LOCK carabiner and an ASAP’AXIS 11 mm rope. An ASAP’SORBER or ASAP’SORBER AXESS energy absorber can be used, when needed
  • EAC when used with an OK TRIACT-LOCK carabiner and an EN 1891 type A, 10-13 mm rope. An ASAP’SORBER or ASAP’SORBER AXESS energy absorber can be used, when needed
  • ANSI Z359.15 when used with an ASAP’SORBER or ASAP’SORBER AXESS energy absorber, a Bm’D or OXAN TRIACT-LOCK (international version) carabiner, a CAPTIV positioning bar, and a RAY 12 mm rope

New Petzl ASAP’SORBER range

The ASAP’SORBER range is now much easier to understand because all three are certified to EN 355 and ANSI Z359.13.

Certification
CE EN 355, ANSI Z359.13 6 feet

The ASAP’SORBER AXESS remains the only product with a rescue capacity (up to 250 kg). The CAPTIV is no longer delivered with the ASAP’SORBER. Please note: for compliance with ANSI Z359.13, you need to use the CAPTIV.

The old ASAP and current ASAP LOCK (B071BA00) are compatible with the new ASAP’SORBER’s. However, when used together, the system will not be certified.

Skylotec Milan 2.0

The Skylotec Milan 2.0 is the ‘go to’ industrial evacuation Controlled Rate Descender (CRD). There are three devices in the range. The A-027 which doesn’t have the facility to lift a casualty (for abseiling only), the A-028 which has the hub / wheel to facilitate a lift and the A-029 which also has the hub functionality but can also be used with the Skylotec Rescue Device Driver (RDD) which provides powered ascents. All three offer:

  • a constant abseiling speed of 0.9 m per second
  • 2 person capacity (260 kg)
  • coated core super static 9 mm rope
  • maximum abseil height of 500 m (subject to rope length)
  • temperature range  -35 °C to +60 °C
  • maximum service life of 20 years

The Milan is ideally suited for numerous sectors, notably:

  • Wind energy
  • Oil and Gas
  • Power networks
  • Telecoms
  • Fire Service / Rescue
  • Construction
  • Crane operators
  • Special Forces

A-027 Milan 2.0

Front of Skylotec Milan 2.0 (A-027)

Karabiners are at both ends of the rope. This facilitates alternate abseiling (in a yo-yo fashion). Provided that the rope length is the same as the structure height, as soon as the first evacuee(s) are on the ground, further evacuee(s) can attach themselves and escape (without having to pull the rope through). Otherwise, a temporary attachment point can be tied into the rope when the first evacuee(s) have safely reach the ground.

Moisture protection

All rescue devices kept for emergencies must be checked once a year, even if they have not been used. The Skylotec SEAL PAC makes this regular thorough inspection unnecessary. In this case, the Milan is stored in a specially sealed aluminium box. Once a year, a Skylotec authorised inspector should open the box and check the moisture indicator on the packaging to make sure it is in good condition. If it is, the inspector seals the box once more. This saves time and money in not having to send the Milan away. This makes the SEAL PAC ideal for use in wind turbines and crane cabs. After 10 years, Skylotec must re-seal the SEAL PAC, which can then give an overall life-time of 20 years.

Top view of Skylotec SEAL PAC (SET-SEAL PAC-)

It’s important to realise that only the Milan 2.0 and Milan 2.0 Hub can be stored in the SEAL PAC. The Milan 2.0 Power can’t because of the battery pack on the Rescue Device Driver (RDD).

The Seal Pac Light To Go (SET-SEALPAC-LITG10L) has been designed to ensure safety for mobile deployments. This 59 litre padded lightweight dry bag can easily be taken with you from deployment location to deployment location (provided the indicator does not show any signs of moisture). Maximum service life of 10 years.
